“Paya” is the word for “water” in the Paiute language; in showing this important film, we hope to exposes a hidden perspective of the well-known story presented in Marc Reisner’s Cadillac Desert of the battle for water between Los Angeles and the farmers of the Owens River Valley. The farmers were not, in fact, the only community to be deprived of their water rights. This film will educate the audience about the Paiute tribe’s version of this story and their struggle to reclaim their water rights. The film screening will be held in in ENR2 107 on Friday, April 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Following the screening will be a discussion lead by Winona Singel with the film’s director, Jenna Cavelle, and members of the Owens Valley Paiute and Shoshone tribes, including Harry Williams (Environmental Activist), Kathy Bancroft (Tribal Historic Preservation Officer), and Teri Red Owl (Owens Valley Indian Water Commission Director).
