Robert Houston, local novelist and U. of A. Professor Emeritus, wrote a fictional account of the «Great Biusbee Deportation» of 1917, a seminal event in both Arizona and labor history. On July 12, 1917 1,185 men were herded into filthy boxcars by an armed vigilante force in Bisbee, Arizona, and abandoned across the New Mexico border. The Bisbee Deportation of 1917 was not only a pivotal event in Arizona's labor history, but one that had an effect on labor activities throughout the country. Robert will speak on events leading up to the vigilante action, it's impact on the IWW and labor movements nationwide, and will read from his book.
