On August 20, 1775 Hugo O’Connor, Commandante Inspector of the Spanish presidios along the northern frontier of New Spain, selected and marked the site for a new presidio at San Agustín de Tucsón. Although Chuk-shon had been a farming settlement of O’odham and their ancestors for millennia, this date marks the beginning of its transformation into the northernmost urban outpost of Sonora, and is therefore celebrated as Tucson’s Birthday. On this date Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace celebrates the 4000 years and counting of Tucson’s agricultural history.
