Artist Terrol Dew Johnson is a nationally recognized Tohono O’odham basket weaver whose work has appeared in exhibitions around the country and is in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum and the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of the American Indian, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.
Over the course of two days, this workshop will provide the skills, tools, and materials needed to complete your very own coil basket, woven in the traditional style using traditional materials. Terrol will provide a history of traditional and contemporary basket weaving where participants can learn about this rich culture from one of the nation’s top Native American basket weavers. Getting hands on experience, this workshop will not only provide participants with the techniques to create their own basket, but an understanding of this time honored practice and the history behind every stitch and weave.
Materials, tools, and lunch are included.
