Five cumbia bands from across the US-Mexico borderlands meet in Tucson to play together for the first time! Two stages host discussion, irresistible rhythm, and dancing for this landmark celebration of our region’s music.
Cumbia is the rhythm of Las Américas. Every region from Arizona to Argentina has its own variation, and these young artists are bringing this ancestral expression of mestizaje into the 21st century in vibrant, exciting ways.
Chicha Dust (Tucson) — Tucson’s XIXA returns to their chicha roots for a massive party sound.
LA DIABLA (Tijuana) — influenced by Andrés Landero and cumbia sabanera of Colombia, will be debuting new material.
Frontera Bugalú (El Paso / Ciudad Juárez) — For almost 10 years, this band has brought its beautiful songwriting and hip-shaking cumbia to dancefloors across the southwest.
Native Creed (Tohono O’odham Nation) — Bringing native waila and cumbia driven by guitar, accordion and saxophone. A favorite on the T.O. Nation makes their El Tambó debut.
Sonido Cachimbo (Ciudad Juárez) — Tucson debut!
Sonido El Tambó (Tucson) — DJ Dirtyverbs (Logan Phillips, founder), DJQ (Enrique García Naranjo), DJ Toltech EL Tambo, DJ Humble Lianess (Meleena Araceli) — the DJ crew hosts the event and highlights cumbia’s intersections with electronic sounds.
6pm: Panel Discussion with artists, sponsored by Southwest Folklife Alliance and CALA Alliance
7pm: Mezcal Happy Hour with vendors, community organizations and special all-vinyl DJ sets
7:30pm: Bands & DJ’s begin.
