KIAS features a selection of songs written by Mike «Doc Twang» Olson going back over 30 years, some of them not heard in years and given new life by the latest killer lineup of Key Ingredients of African Soul musicians AND we will enthusiastically welcome back our traveling Zimbo singer Praise Zenenga. In addition to our originals, many co-written by Doc and Praise, we will cover some of our favorite classics from Afro-pop legends like Thomas Mapfumo, Tshala Muana and Cardinal Jim «Rex» Lawson.

The Key Ingredients of African Soul will again bring their Pan-African extravaganza to Monterey Court once again. It is a family friendly event with a $5 entry fee.

While geographically isolated in southern Arizona, the Key Ingredients of African Soul have been contributing to the world's Afro-pop music scene since 2008. Through the travels and outreach efforts of band co-founders, Praise Zenenga, a University of Arizona professor hailing from Zimbabwe, and Mike Olson aka Doc Twang, a veteran of decades of traditional and modern African music studies, Tucson, Arizona is becoming well known as a prime destination for African artists seeking collaborators or a backing band able to perform their culture's music. They have opened concerts for Malian performers, Tinariwen and Khaira Arby, shared the Ashkenaz stage in Berkeley with Baba Ken Okulolo and his AfroBeat ConneXXion and, in addition, their CD recordings feature an impressive list of collaborations with both well known and aspiring artists from Africa.

The Key Ingredients of African Soul are an organically grown ensemble that has managed to survive, evolve and thrive for over eight years, totally independent of any record company support, no small miracle in itself! These days, they perform at Monterey Court the last Saturday of every other month! Featuring the joyful, spirit infused mix of marimba, guitars, drums and voices, they will take your imagination on a tour of Africa's music styles, dances and languages, from Zimbabwe to the Congo to Nigeria and beyond!

While there are bands around the USA who specialize in different kinds of African music, there are few, if any, more versatile than the Key Ingredients of African Soul! Their highly charged fusion of Soukous, Highlife, Chemurenga, Township, Sungura, Reggae and more will make your day, maybe your whole week!

Performing originals and covers rooted in various styles of Afro-pop, African Folk, Reggae and Caribbean Soca, the Key Ingredients of African Soul delight our audiences with an enchanting mix of Marimba, Guitar, Drums and Voices. We currently feature vocalists/dancers from Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe and the USA, all of whom engage our audiences by providing many opportunities to participate through song or dance. Our positive vibrations are designed to please your ears, stimulate your mind, move your feet and warm your heart.
In early 2008, what began as a series of lunchtime jams resulted in the creation of The Key Ingredients of African Soul, a coalition of many talented musicians with singer/songwriter K-Bass (Bassirima Soro) as their primary front man. Playing music from Africa and beyond, with Doctor Twang as their primary music arranger, the Key Ingredients of African Soul are the latest and most impressive evolution of a musical vision which began over thirty years ago.
For many years, Michael J. Olson aka Doctor Twang has been dedicated to presenting music and dance as vehicles for communication and the sharing of cultures, ideas and ideologies between nations, communities and individuals. A multi-instrumentalist, Michael plays guitar, bass, djembe, congas and many other drums and percussion instruments including marimba, berimbao, and kalimba. $5 at the gate.
